GeoTech 2012, Fairfax Marriott at Fair Oaks, Fairfax VA, Oct 25th and 26th, 2012

All sessions will be held at the conference hotel

Theme: "Human Geography is much more than Human Terrain"
Subtopics: Elevation Data Sources and Reference Systems

GeoTech2012 is addressing the human element of geospatial data, a theme that concerns many of the ASPRS Potomac Region's membership. The collection of remote sensing images of people and their imprint on the land have for many years been instrumental in providing data for maps and for supporting economic development. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Jerome E. Dobson, had a leadership role in developing the LandScan Global Population Database. This database has become the world standard for estimating populations at risk especially in times of natural disasters.

Other papers will consider the role of geospatial technology in locating and analyzing places (villages, towns, cities and other human habitation across the earth) and of assessing the infra-structure that supports these places. The vast data sets provide a major challenge to analysts and require data reduction to recognize, generate and validate spatial patterns. These techniques also require a sensitivity to scale and to influences such as elevation and global context.

Our second theme introduces the new technology of Flash LIDAR and looks at the need for precision in our reference system especially when dealing with topography. Progress with the new Geocentric Datum and linkages to existing systems is discussed in our workshops and in the plenary session. Other contributions review automated 3-D mapping, mobile mapping and the use of remote sensing to better understand human settlements.

The conference concludes with a review of the fortieth anniversary of the Landsat program and the current plans for its future.
